John was the son of the priest Zachariah. The Angel Gabriel came to Zacharias in the Temple and told him that John would be born to him and his wife.

John lived in the desert for years. He ate only locusts and wild honey.  He wore a rough garment of camel's skin. His hair reached his shoulders.

John cried out "Do penance, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand! I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness. Make straight the way of the Lord." Large crowds were baptized by him at the River Jordan.
John said about Jesus, "Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world!"

As John baptized Jesus, the Holy Spirit appeared in the form of a dove, and the Heavenly Father said, "This is My Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

When John told King Herod that he should not be married to his brother's wife, he was thrown into prison.
Jesus said , "Among those that are born of women, there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist."

O God, You raised up John the Baptist to prepare a perfect people for Christ. Fill Your people with the joy of possessing Your grace and direct the minds of all the faithful in way of peace and salvation.
