On Thursday, May 28, 1998. It was just like any other day;
Brooke, my 7-year-old daughter, had her best friend over to play. It hadn't really warmed up yet but the girls wanted to go swimming, I first said no, thinking that her friend Julia's mother wouldn't like them swimming alone but Brooke said she wouldn't mind because she had her bathing suit with her. The next thing I knew they wanted to take my 3-year-old daughter Lacey with them. I said okay but I still pulled up all the blinds at the window so I could keep an eye out for them. All the preparation, there still was the most horrifying accident that almost cost Lacey her life. Lacey was playing around in the water with Brooke and Julia and everything was okay, but Lacey decided to throw her swimming ring down and she went down the slide without it on and she went straight to the bottom. Brooke and Julia were unaware of this and they were on the other side of the pool and didn't see Lacey down there. No one knows for sure how long she was down there but when Brooke did see her she swam right away over to her. Lacey was completely filled with water and totally unconscious. Julia tried to get her out but she couldn't. Lacey was just too heavy for her. Brooke's adrenaline kicked in and she pulled her out by pulling both arms and when she saw her sister she started screaming and I knew at this point something was terribly wrong. I ran out there as fast as I could and saw Lacey lying there totally blue and lifeless. I just couldn't believe it. I looked at Brooke and she ran in and grabbed the phone and dial 911. As soon as I told the operator what was wrong and gave them our address I started CPR. Lacey was so far gone that I didn't think I was getting anywhere with her. I kept giving her CPR untill they arrived which seemed an eternally. While I was waiting I tried calling my husband and didn't get him then I tried calling our preacher and couldn't get him then I threw down the phone and at this point I started screaming out to God, to Please help me, and I got a faint little groan from her. I looked up and saw the paramedics there and let them take over. Everything they tried to do wouldn't wake her up. I remember hearing them say "We've got to get her out of here now!" They took her off in the ambulance and wouldn't let me ride with them. At the end of the driveway, my husband had arrived and they wouldn't tell him anything and he wouldn't let up and finally they told him "there's been a drowning here today." He still didn't know who it was so he looked on the bed to see whom it was and he realizes it was his baby girl. They left with her and I ran in her room to pick out her a dress I didn't want people seeing her naked. (This would be her last dress) and as they left they got half way down the road and to their amazement she woke-up. They opened the back of the ambulance door and screamed out to my husband to meet them at the hospital. He left right away. The next 5 hours would be critical. They ran brain scan and lung tests on her. They all came back normal. When Lacey woke up the next morning in ICU and asked me to fix her hair I knew she was fine and that our Lord had saved her. God put his hand on Lacey and that is why she is here today. I had found out later that on the report the paramedics gave said that Lacey was DOA when they got there. There was more than one miracle here 1st God brought Lacey back to life, 2nd- a 7 year old saved her sisters life 3rd-When the paramedics tried to open our front door it was locked and he ran to go get an ax from his truck when he got back the door was open and no one opened it, all was there was a bunch of babies. (I do home day-care).
I wrote out what a miracle means to me and read it to our church, MIRACLE, I USED TO TAKE THAT WORD FOR GRANTED. A MIRACLE TO ME WAS WHEN A BABY WAS BORN. HAVING A CHILD COME INTO THIS WORLD FROM A TINY SEED IS A MIRACLE. BUT NOW THAT WORD HAS A WHOLE NEW MEANING FOR ME AND ONE I SUSPECT I WILL NEVER FORGET IN MY WHOLE LIFE. I SAW MY BABY LEGALLY DROWNED, I WAS IN HER ROOM PICKING OUT HER LAST DRESS, AND AFTER THEY LEFT WITH HER SHE CAME BACK. THIS IS A MIRACLE THE PARAMEDICS DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW SHE CAME BACK AND WITHOUT ANY BRAIN DAMAGE. EVERYTIME I LOOK AT LACEY I SEE THE WORD MIRACLE WRITTEN ACROSS HER FACE. PRAYERS AND MIRACLES GO TOGETHER. Brooke, Our Tiny Hero
